Colin McPhee heard a gamelan record in 1929 and went off to live in Bali for a decade or so. He was a Canadian composer who had quite a good go at introducing Balinese stylings into Western classical music (Poulenc too, in the Concerto for Two Pianos). Here are the tiny and gemlike three pieces for two pianos called Balinese Ceremonial Music (really one would like them to go on all evening like a real gamelan performance), played by McPhee and Ben Britten.
