Stephen Joyce, the writer's grandson - he likes to be known by his full name of Stephen James Joyce, and refers to himself as such in the third person - so then, Stephen Joyce appears to be rather a nasty bit of work.
The man is the last surviving descendant, and is effectively in charge of the Joyce estate. The beans are spilled in this New Yorker article, in which we hear the spawn quoted as follows, having blocked a multimedia Ulysses project after his request for $1.5m was refused: “You should consider a new career as a garbage collector in New York City, because you’ll never quote a Joyce text again.”
The kicker is, he lives on the Île de Ré off the French coast (where the fleur de sel comes from), and I'll be staying about 5 miles away from his house this summer. The Woody Allen comment about 'getting some bricks and baseball bats and really explaining things to them' springs to mind . . .
